AFP: AI to the Rescue of Aging Industrial Sites

In an AFP interview, Laurent Bourgouin, CEO of Samp, shared how a tragic explosion in 2009 exposed a critical issue: outdated technical documentation leads to serious safety risks. A subcontractor, relying on old paper plans, unknowingly struck a buried gas pipeline, resulting in a fatal accident. This experience led Bourgouin to co-found Samp (Shared Reality for Industrial Sites) with Shivani Shah, an AI specialist, to eliminate uncertainty in industrial operations.

In the original article Bourgouin highlights that the average industrial site in France being 40 years old, outdated documentation is a widespread issue. Over time, modifications are made, but technical plans are rarely updated, leading to errors, inefficiencies, and safety hazards. Samp’s Shared Reality solution addresses this challenge by combining AI and 3D technology to reconcile site documentation with actual site conditions in just days.

The impact is significant: faster repairs, reduced costs, and improved safety. Beyond operational benefits, Bourgouin highlights Samp’s role in the green transition. As industries shift to hydrogen and low-carbon energy, having precise digital documentation is crucial.
